INSECTS
Plecia species

Insects, despite their fragility, are common fossils in some fresh water deposits and are well represented in amber. The earliest insects are found in the Devonian deposits of Scotland. They became numerous in the Carboniferous coal swamps.

This picture is of an adult dipteran insect, Plecia species, from the Oligocene lake deposits near Le Puy-en-Valay, France.
